But the real payoff comes as the tune starts its dramatic conclusion. The slow simmer evolves into a rolling boil as Carman (drums) steadily and expertly brings up the energy while Jimmy James soars on top with a shredding guitar solo.

A jaunty guitar groove opens things up before Did Ya Know? eases into its sleek, sunny pocket, buoyed by a playful organ thats warm and a little mischievous. It calls to mind the smooth sweetness of These Eyes by the Guess Who crossed with a sunshine reggae lilt ā cool, unhurried, and completely effortless. There is something to be said about being both popular and prolific enough to be anthologizedāitās a space that soul music stalwart Kelly Finnigan and his latest release, B-Sides, Singles & Forgotten Gems, occupies with intent and fire. Serving as a mile marker pacing the fifteen-year collaboration between Finnigan and Colemine Records, B-Sides, Singles & Forgotten Gems is an easter egg moment for new and long-time fans to collect rare takes and flip sides in one spot, while unearthing Finniganās evolution as an artist, producer, and vocalist.
From his earliest explorations to one of the first tracks cut at his new studio in Ohio, this travelogue in sound both brings the listener forward to the present while laying out Kelly Finniganās road ahead.
āIts nice to reintroduce material that really was the beginning of my relationship with Terry and Colemine,ā says Finnigan. āAnd so, it made perfect sense to look at a B-side by my group called Destruments and a song called āFreedomāā¦ Theres so much focus on [the early work of] Monophonics that [Destruments] gets overshadowed and forgotten about, so Im happy to reintroduce it.ā With its wide-open experimentation and tight-but-loose feel, āFreedomā plants the flag for psychedelic soul while serving as an early vocal for Finnigan. The power and soulfulness are finding their way to hold court within the mix.
Songs like āTroubleā and āKeep Me In Mindā are unshackled from the 45, given room to move and breathe, extending the groove beyond the physical limits of a single. āKeep Me in Mindā is also a nod to the classic B-side playbook, the cover song. Deep cuts like the Samson & Delilah track, along with āItās Not That Easyā (Reuben Bell with The Cassenovas) and āIt Hurts Me So Muchā (Barbara & the Browns) strengthen that connective tissue between inspiration and elevation.
Conversely, the collectionās closing track, āThe Hurting Truth,ā features another longtime Colemine comrade, Jimmy James (Parlor Greens). This previously unreleased track serves as a fitting close to this collection. āI had just gotten into my new space in Cincinnati,ā recalls Finnigan. āThe day before Jimmy came, Terry (Cole, Colemineās label head) had come over and played bass on a different songā¦so when Jimmy came early, and Terry wasnt here, I was like, āYo, Jimmy, I want you to play on this song Im working on.ā Jimmys always downā¦and so he played the bassā¦ doing his thing, and then he played the guitar partā¦and he helped finish the song, and then I finished the words and melodiesā¦ it came together fast.ā
Ultimately, B-Sides, Singles & Forgotten Gems is a love letter to Finniganās relationship with his longtime label, Colemine Records, and their fans. Itās a partnership that started in the labelās early days and continues to be a fruitful collaboration.
āColemine has grown so much, Ive grown so muchā¦ I think [this collection is a chance to] take a little look back and share that with the people, the fans, the music lovers, the Colemine lovers,ā says Finnigan.

The ocotillo is an imposing figure, tall and reminiscent of a torch. I dedicated this song to the desert dwelling plant after a particularly challenging tour that took our band through the southwest. After days of unbearable heat and humidity, reaching New Mexico surprisingly gave us some reprieve. After landing at the venue in Silver City, I took a walk to clear my head and observe the scenery as the mountain climate provided a more manageable atmosphere to exist and reflect in. - Seth Applebaum, GFO
