September 13, 1996. Michael returned to Bucharest, Romania, where he gave out toys and played with children from the "Leaganul De Copii Sfanta Ecaterina" state orphanage. He also made a 35 million Lei (1 million dollars) donation and along with a number of children, knelt before a monument dedicated to the victims of the 1989 Romanian revolution. After handing out toys, Michael said, “I wish all the world was here to see this, instead of sending our brothers to the killing fields. This is our future - children. I love you all so much.”
Michael sat on the floor and played with lego with the children and ate candy. He wasn’t afraid of interacting and making contact with the kids, some that had AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. He even accepted candy into his mouth, offered by one of the kids. These children had never known the warmth of a home or a family, some had lost their families to death & disease and some were abandoned. Where the mood is usually sombre & sad, Michael’s visit made the children’s day cheerful & happy. One staff member said “I’ve never seen the kids so happy. It’s like Christmas for them!”
