The weight equivalent of 4 Boeing 747s filled with passengers and cargo laid upon the Metrodome yesterday morning... and it was just too much for it to handle. Around 5 am Sunday morning, the roof tore open and deflated the dome. A vast majority of the Teflon panels are the originals installed in 1982 but exceeded structural expectations when last inspected in spring 2010.
Not only did the Dome break, but so did the National Weather Service reporting stations across the midwest. Many observation sites were offline between 8:53pm Sunday until after 12am Monday... with the exception of a few automated sites that went offline just after 9:30pm. WeatherSTARs are programmed to throw out old data if not refreshed after a certain period of time.
Had they been functioning, they would've been reporting temperatures well below zero.
