Constipation isn’t just another symptom of methane SIBO. In most cases it tells me where we need to start to get people feeling better.
Methane SIBO symptoms like bloating, distension, gas, burping, reflux, abdominal pain and slow motility all take a backseat to constipation and until bowels are moving better, more complete, daily, no straining nothing else tends to improve.
Instead of focusing on killing the methane bug I’ve become much more interested in the environment that allows methane to thrive in the first place. If constipation is common, intestinal transit is slow and the gut environment hasn’t changed simply because we’ve started killing microbes then even if symptoms improve they tend to regress again over time.
If bowel function hasn’t improved, there’s a good chance the environment that allowed the problem to develop hasn’t improved much either.
