The goal was to achieve Big Boss rank while also saving Dr. Madnar, a task that can be entirely skipped if you already know the information he gives you, (which is vital to beat the game), upon saving him and does canonically happen during the events of Operation Intrude N313.

Credit to this route goes to@SoulSignal, who without his walkthrough covering this idea - doing it with 0 Rations and only making use of 1 single save - I'd have never been able to include it with the Saladin Challenge.
