Metal edged skis can certainly help control speed on downhill sloples on cross country ski trails. In this video I test the Rossignol EVO OT 60 which has a partial metal edge. It is wider than the typical cross country ski but still fits in the groomed tracks of a cross country trail system. Besides keeping your speed down on the hills I found it provided good grip but also surprisingly good glide in the tracks. And it can also be used in non groomed trail situations.
