Yesterday I had my first signing of menhaden aka bunker, just off the coast of Southampton, NY!
What may appear as ordinary average footage …..is quite an extraordinary capture this time of year.
This will be my 10th season documenting marine life off the coast of New York via drone. Never have I ever seen menhaden in the ocean off the coast of the East End of Long Island this early in the season. Usually, they're headed towards the bays first and hang out there for a few weeks. I don't usually see them in the ocean until mid-June. The school (which divided into two) was too large to fit into one frame.
Throw in a couple of 24ft+ striped bass as a bonus and I was thrilled!
I started the morning in Montauk in search of great whites. Unsuccessfully, I found no schools of fish on the surface between Montauk and Bridgehampton. Lots of fishing boats were out at the Point, though!
