The oud is an ancient instrument, related to a family of instruments that stretches back thousands of years. Its most recent predecessor is probably the Persian Barbat (which concurrently exists today) and the modern oud has fractured into two main regional types: Arabic and Turkish. A storied and historically important instrument, you can plainly see the oud's influence on lutes and its web of relations to stringed instruments that have reached every corner of the earth.
