Jafiada was six months pregnant when she and her husband had to flee armed conflict in northeast Nigeria in 2014. Her family were able to return home, but drought and conflict have created massive food shortages, and cases of malnutrition are on the rise.

Now Jafiada is a mother of three and volunteers as an advocate in mother-to-mother support groups promoting exclusive breastfeeding to tackle malnutrition in her community.

“My favourite thing about this work is that we are changing the lives of women in our community…Children are the future. If the mother is healthy, the child is healthy,” she told us.

The IRC helps parents raise healthy children by treating malnutrition, providing nutritious meal packs, offering education and more, so kids are able to achieve key milestones and reach their full potential.
