Meet Dr. Daniel Morales-Armstrong, a Black DiaspoRican educator and historian specializing in Puerto Rican slavery and emancipation and Research Associate for 2024-2025 of Rooted + Relational!
His research focuses on the resistance of formerly enslaved Puerto Ricans, known as “libertxs,” against the forced labor mandate that followed emancipation, explored through the "Libertos de Puerto Rico" project.
This bilingual initiative aims to make these important stories accessible to Puerto Rican communities in the archipelago and diaspora. By centering libertxs in this narrative, Dr. Morales-Armstrong highlights their acts of defiance and illuminates their ongoing struggle for freedom and agency.
Founded in 1973 by a coalition of students, faculty, and activists, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO) is the largest university-based research institute, library, and archive dedicated to the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
