Nancy Moore, mother of the singers Christy Moore and Luka Bloom on why talent runs in the family.

Gay Byrne addresses a member of 'The Late Late Show' audience as Mrs Moore. She responds,

Nancy if you please, nobody calls me Mrs Moore, only people that don’t like me.

Nancy Moore (née Power) from Newbridge, County Kildare speaks with pride about her six children. Her eldest son is the folksinger Christy Moore and her youngest son Barry is the folksinger known as Luka Bloom. Nancy is quick to point out that her son Andy is also a good singer and she has three gifted daughters Eilish, Anne and Terry.

Nancy Moore puts the musical talent in the family down to the fact that she is a frustrated singer herself. In her younger years Nancy got the lead part in the operetta ‘Lilac Time’ but her father insisted she give up any notions of being a singer.

I didn’t have a nervous breakdown or anything I just cried for two days and got over it.

Nancy Moore eventually became involved in local politics. She was a member of Newbridge Town Commission and a member of Kildare County Council. She was also associated with Fine Gael for many years.

Seated beside Nancy Moore in the audience is her eldest daughter Eilish, who accepts an invitation to sing. She performs a version of ‘The Work Song’ a cappella. The Work Song was written by Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle. It was first released by the American singer Maria Muldaur in 1973.

This episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was first broadcast on 13 May 1988. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
