The goal of an athlete under coaching should be partly to grow beyond their coach, in terms of being able to coach themselves. In the same way that we learn to cook for ourselves, take care of ourselves, we should learn to program our own training, and understand why different methodologies work better or worse for ourselves. A good coach prepares you for this eventuality, instead of spoon feeding you information for the rest of your life. I think that given enough time, a coach/athlete relationship tends more toward a friendship, where both opinions are valued equally in contributing toward one's programming and success. Those athletes that simply feed on information without assimilating it, and those coaches who don't explain the reasons behind programming choices are only perpetuating the problem.
