🌊 When a tsunami strikes, there’s no time to think — only to act.
In 2025, Mauritius joined countries across the Indian Ocean for a large-scale tsunami simulation exercise, testing every step of its warning chain — from national operations to local evacuations.
The Indian Ocean Wave Exercise 2025 recreated a magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Pakistan’s Makran Trench, simulating how warnings, sea rescue, and coastal response systems would perform under real conditions.
This drill is part of a regional effort coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and supported by UNDRR and other partners, ensuring countries remain tsunami ready.
As Commanding Officer Premanand Budhoo explains:
“When it’s going to come, you have to be prepared, because the havoc it will bring is so high that you cannot underestimate that.”
