Earlier this month while on Maui, I made it my mission to track down this truck which I had seen last summer but was unable to follow and film at the time. As luck had it, I waited in the same spot I saw it last year at the same time of morning, and like clockwork I followed it to the dump and subsequently to the 2nd load of its route. This truck particularly tickles my fancy as it’s the closest thing running to the GMC/McNeilus Metropak Rear Loaders LA City ran in the 2000s. The GMC T8500 cabover model is pretty nostalgic of that time period and as the years have passed they are quite uncommon to see on refuse trucks nowadays. That said, the Hawaiian Islands appear to be home of at least a handful of T8500s running for various smaller companies on multiple islands.
Maui Disposal and Waste Pro Hawaii (formerly Aloha Waste/Waste Resources) split up all the open market commercial accounts on Maui pretty evenly and also have various residential contracts consisting of condos and HOAs that the County of Maui doesn’t service. I have seen a mix of manual and automated from both private haulers throughout my exploration of the island, though it seems like automated is a relatively recent addition to WPH’s business. Next summer when my wife and I inevitably return, I plan on tracking down some automated trucks from both Maui Disposal and WPH.
