Two nonprofits with family ties to a Maui economic development director have taken home $1 million in county grants overseen by her since she was appointed.
Luana Mahi’s husband, Kalani Mahi, was paid directly under a county grant for a watershed project and her son, Keokoa Mahi, was hired to manage that grant.
One of her son’s nonprofits got a grant for the infamous “Maui Wall of Fame” in Kahului Airport, and an employee in Mahi’s office got a gig as an administrative assistant for one of the nonprofits tied to her.
Mahi hasn’t returned our inquiries, but the Maui Board of Ethics is calling this a conflict of interest.
