Folks who call Waianae home are the only ones on Oahu who are more than 30 minutes away from a full-service hospital, as reporter Blaze Lovell told Hawaii News Now Sunrise.

The Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center is critically important to Oahu’s Westside, yet it hasn’t seen a funding boost from the state over the past 16 years. Compare that to other providers where funding levels have increased by by 20% or more.

Waianae Coast Comprehensive has been getting about $1.4 million a year from the state, and executives say they’re stretched thin at a time when they’d like to increase mental health resources following deadly shootings that they’ve called a public health crisis.

But running an emergency room — the only one on the Waianae Coast, at that — doesn’t come cheap.
