Here we go over the different supplies that you will need in order to hookup your generator to your main electrical panel by way of a power inlet box, generator cord, 30 ampere breaker, and a generator interlock kit.
This is the most economical and low hassle method of connecting a generator to your house in a power outage in my opinion.
MAKE SURE that you purchase the correct interlock kit! I ordered the wrong on the first time around so do your homework before ordering.
Also, if you have a generator with a 50 amp 240v socket then you should consider upgrading all of these components to match that 50A capacity.
Note that if you are going to be running the wire to your inlet box outdoors or in a damp/wet location you need to buy the UF rated wire. Conduit alone is not sufficient in order to use standard "Romex" outdoors and it does not meet code.
