Cheers, tears and relief filled the room on Match Day 2026 as 121 UC Davis School of Medicine students discovered where they will train for residency — the next major step toward becoming physicians. At exactly 9 a.m., students opened envelopes or refreshed emails revealing their futures, joining tens of thousands of medical students across the country in one of the most emotional milestones of their training. Some gathered in person at ANOVA at Aggie Square, while others celebrated from home, all connected by Zoom as they shared their results with classmates, friends and family.
Behind the celebrations is the highly structured process of the National Resident Matching Program, which pairs students and residency programs using a computer algorithm based on ranked preferences. This year, 122 UC Davis students entered the match and 121 secured positions, with 91% staying in California and half entering primary care fields like internal medicine, pediatrics and family medicine. In the coming weeks, students will complete their training, graduate on May 16, and begin residency programs — typically lasting three to seven years — on July 1, marking the start of their careers as newly matched doctors.
