Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that inflames the liver and can lead to symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, prolonged illness, weight loss, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). While many people recover, hepatitis B can sometimes cause liver failure, require a liver transplant, or be fatal.
