Masters of the Universe movie review — this brand-new He-Man movie is a rock ’n’ roll fantasy epic that brings childhood adventure back to the big screen in the best way.
In this non-spoiler review, I’m sharing my thoughts on Masters of the Universe, the new live-action film directed by Travis Knight and based on the iconic Mattel franchise. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam / He-Man, with Jared Leto as Skeletor, alongside Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, Kristen Wiig, and more. The film is set to release in theaters on June 5, 2026.
And honestly? I really dug this movie.
Masters of the Universe is an awesome time at the movies. It is big, colorful, weird, fantasy-driven, and filled with the kind of pulpy adventure that feels like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and classic Saturday morning cartoons all smashed together into one massive childhood fantasy epic.
What worked for me most is that the movie understands the tone it needs to have. It does not run away from the ridiculousness of He-Man, Skeletor, Eternia, magic swords, cosmic lore, and over-the-top fantasy. Instead, it embraces all of it. This is a movie that knows it is based on a wild, beloved cartoon and toyline, and it uses that energy to create something fun, sincere, and huge.
Nicholas Galitzine makes for a really strong He-Man / Prince Adam, bringing the heroic charm and physical presence the role needs. But for me, Skeletor is one of the biggest highlights. Jared Leto’s Skeletor feels theatrical, dangerous, weird, and exactly the kind of larger-than-life villain this universe needs.
The action is fun, the world of Eternia is visually exciting, and the fantasy lore gives the movie a much bigger scale than I expected. It feels like a genuine adventure film made for newcomers, longtime fans, and anyone who grew up loving big mythic stories about heroes, villains, swords, destiny, and imagination.
I also have to shout out the score. The music gives the movie a huge sense of energy, and it helps make Masters of the Universe feel like a true fantasy adventure rather than just another IP reboot.
