Today I have a Kwikset rim cylinder to show you all. This lock is mastered, meaning there are additional “pins” in the lock between the key pins and drivers to create multiple shear lines. These extra pins are called master wafers.

Having a mastered lock does substantially lower its security value and increases the ease to which it can be picked open. Unlike an SFIC which also have more than one shear line, the shear lines in a mastered lock can be mixed up and still open the lock. Mastering a lock does have its uses though, mostly in commercial building where areas need to be accessed by different departments or people and you want to have a unique key for each.

The expecting to mastering making things easier however, is the Emhart. A mastered Emhart is leagues more difficult to pick compared to an unmastered one.

If you are interested in learning how to pick locks, make sure to check out my playlist covering the basics of how to pick a lock, as well as other useful skills and info here:

If you are looking for other pickers to talk to or a community full of friendly people that will be happy to help you with any lock you are struggling with check out the LPU sub Reddit and discord here:

And always remember: You matter, You’re important, and I’m glad you’re here.

IMPORTANT: do not pick a lock that you do not own or have the expressed permission of the owner to pick! Do not pick a lock that you use and rely on to function as it is intended. Check the legality of lock picking and locksport in your area and or region before starting your journey.
