Today we pick a Weslock with Magnetic Owner Guard. Weslock is an American Lock company based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This particular lock has a magnetic component that involves a small ball bearing. The ball bearing is paired with a cupped driver pin that the ball bearing can slightly recess into.
This lock is also mastered, likely used in an office or multi-occupant location. The master wafers in the lock do lower the security of the lock, as it effectively increases the number of key bitings that can open the lock by giving multiple shear lines. Depending on your desired goal of picking (either open the lock with all master wafers remaining in the plug, all ending in the bible, or just opening the lock) the wafers can add or reduce the difficulty.
A good way to practice your picking and improve your ability to detect pin states and understand feedback, is to try picking master keyed locks and work on trying to pick the master and other shear lines. This is essentially the same as picking an SFIC, expect that you will be able to mix shear lines. The other benefit of this is that it can help you learn to “map” a lock; which can come in handy if you have an SFIC or LFIC with either only a control or operator key and want to make a key for the shear lines you don’t have.
