Mass vs. Background Extinction

We propose two cookie cutters that can be applied to any epoch, age, or period. Mass extinctions are always caused by the disappearance of food. Background extinctions have two related mechanisms: the overturning of the demographic pyramid and the gradual and inevitable decline of genetic diversity.
