Notes from John Robert Matz about this arrangement:
Mass Effect is a game series that occupies a very special place in my heart, and the truly *massive* musical score created by an incredibly talented team of composers plays no small part in that.
As such, in creating a Mass Effect arrangement for The Game Brass, I realized that the scope would have to be something more than just a single track, so, after careful review, I selected iconic pieces from all three games, arranging them in a dramatic arc that paralleled the trilogyโs story structure, taking us through key moments into a triumphant final arrival at the Main Theme.
Reimagining the original palette of orchestra and synthesizers for an all-acoustic chamber ensemble was a challenge, and, in order to adequately capture the grandeur of the original orchestration in this new form, like Commander Shepherd building their squad, I realized that we would want to bring a few extra friends with on the journey. The Videri String Quartet are, as always, absolute joys to collaborate with, and PurpleSchala brings a true touch of emotional, pianistic beauty to the equation. An expanded brass section rounds out the ensemble, with both our usual horn collaborators, Danny Flam and JohnStacy in attendance, as well as the superb Allison Martin adding a second trombone to the mix.
I hope you enjoy this reminiscence on one of my favorite game series of all time. The optimistic, positive view of the future, and the tale of the small band of friends coming together to make a difference against a terrible, unbeatable foe may be ground thatโs been tread before, but the characters and universe made the world of Mass Effect one I loved existing in.

![The Brass Indie Expo First Listen LIVE with The Game Brass
Join The Game Brass on September 1st at 7:30pm EDT for a first listen to our new album, The Brass Indie Expo!
Indie games have long been the lifeblood of the games industry. From the days when DOOM was passed around on floppy discs to the creative explosion of the Flash era and beyond, the indie space has been where small creators bring big ideas to life. The Brass Indie Expo honors that space with arrangements of independent gems from the last 15 years or so.
Here, youโll find beloved melodies from games like Undertale, Cuphead, and even Minecraft, that started small before taking over the world. The retro platforming of A Hat in Time is here, alongside the compelling mysteries of Return of the Obra Dinn. Supergiant is represented with Pyre, their predecessor to Hades, and so is the brooding world of Hollow Knight.
Theyโve even made time for their own music this time, with Robbyโs score for Super Crush KO in the mix, and John Robert reprising his role as the Bard from Wandersong.
The members of The Game Brass are passionate about indie gaming. Many of them work every day in indie game audio. Robbyโs Level Curve studio does soundtracks and audio implementation for everything from Playdate to VR. John Robertโs scores include indie smashes like For the King and Tchia. JohnStacy has recorded for the Tangledeep series and for Wayforward, while you can hear Alex in Tchia and Tooth & Tail. Danny is in Later Daters and The Big Con, while producer Thomas has worked on Tree Tap Adventure and Broken Spectre.
Rahul Vanamali and Doug Perry (Celeste: Aftermath) join for percussion.

Notes from Daniel Romberger about this arrangement:
I really like arranging tunes from NES games (even though this one was made popular by Super Smash Bros. Melee) because there is so much opportunity to add color. An interesting thing about the temple theme (and most of the Zelda II soundtrack) is that nearly all of the phrases of the melody come in identical pairs. This kind of writing makes sense for the original game since its a way of getting more mileage out of the same material. However, it presented an additional challenge when I was doing the arrangement. I didnt want to restate the phrases exactly because wanted to have a broader emotional arc for the piece. So I did my best to introduce variation through dynamics, orchestration, and even syncopation (like at the part 45 seconds in). Working with an ensemble of 16 brass forces provided a lot of opportunity to do this, and I hope you find the emotional narrative of the arrangement satisfying while still being faithful to the original tune.
Fun fact, this is actually my third time arranging this piece. The first time was for Zeldathon Forces as the final part of a big Zelda II medley (since it was noticed that that soundtrack doesnt get as much love). However, we never managed to coordinate a time where all the musicians could play together since there was so much going on at the marathon. Then, over the previous winter, I visited Alex and re-arranged this part of the Zeldathon medley for brass quintet. We played it through at his house but havent recorded the quintet version yet. There are some ideas from each of the two previous versions (such as the cameo of the Zelda I dungeon theme) that made it in here as well, and maybe well record the quintet version of this theme at some point later.
Also, there was some debate about calling this the Zelda II dungeon, palace, or temple theme; we went with Temple since thats how its known in the Super Smash Bros. series even though palace seems to be how the dungeons are known now. This theme is the second of the Horns of Hyrule project; hope you enjoy what comes next!
