In Golden Age Gospel, sadly it is too often the case that some of the greatest singers have been largely forgotten over time. Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, Mary Johnson Davis influenced a generation of singers that followed her including Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward. Her style is unapologetically dramatic and she leaves no note without an elaborate finish. A consummate stylist and church wrecker, she recorded very little and her name is known today to only a handful of old-timers and younger fans of Gospel's classic era.
