Mary Ainsworth's Strange Situation is a Developmental Psychology Study that investigates the patterns of attachment in infants one to two years old. Have you ever noticed the individual differences of attachments people have in their relationships? Why are some people considered cold and distant while others are considered obsessive and clingy? This can be explained by a theory developed by psychologist, John Bowlby in the 1960s. Inspired by his work as a child psychiatrist Bowlby was interested in the dynamic between a mother and infant. The mother and infant bond is the earliest form of attachment one can experience. Because of that, he hypothesized that the mother-infant bond would be a determining factor to the quality of bonds later made in adulthood.

In the 1970's Mary Ainsworth, a student of Bowlby investigated this further by studying individual differences in attachment styles. Her famous study "The Strange Situation" found three types of attachment styles between mother and infant. These styles are secure attachment, insecure avoidant, and insecure ambivalent. In this video, we discuss all three and how they determine the relationships you form as an adult.

In later studies, research has found a fourth type of attachment style called Disorganized/Disoriented attachment. Upon reunion with the mother/caregiver, the child "would run towards their parent and then maybe freeze as they got closer. Some children would even pull away from their parent, run away, or even lash out violently". This is often seen when there is neglect in the household.
