The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a revered poet and advisor in the court of Chu during the Warring States Period. Devastated by his country’s downfall, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River in Hunan province. As the story goes, villagers raced in their boats to save him, beat drums, and threw rice into the river to keep fish from eating him, leading to the origin of the boat races and zongzi (bamboo leaf-wrapped rice dumplings). Today, dragon boat races are part of the national intangible cultural heritage of China, symbolizing unity and strength.
