The amazing Martin Miller can alternate pick anything, right? So it's surprising when we take a picking pattern that Martin plays very well and render it temporarily unplayable just by changing the *fretting*. And this reveals a core truth of expert-level picking technique: picking and fretting motions are memorized together. What looks like a continuous motion in the picking hand is actually more like a sequence of flipbook images of both hands operating simultaneously. Change one of them, and they can sometimes both stop working - at least for the moment.
