European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos spoke at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland.
Kos said the discussion on Ukraine is urgently needed because Russia’s brutal war is becoming even more brutal. She said that in July alone, 436 innocent people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured.
She welcomed the presence of key partners — Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland — to discuss how to help Ukraine even more, especially as the country prepares for what she warned could be its worst winter ever.
Kos also focused on Ukraine’s EU accession path, saying that all remaining clusters waiting to be opened should move forward as soon as possible. Her message was clear: Ukraine has delivered, and Europe should deliver too.
She also said Europe must examine how to use all its tools more effectively and improve decision-making so the EU can be stronger and more heard in a turbulent world.
As Enlargement Commissioner, Kos said this debate is crucial because EU enlargement could happen during the current Commission, with Montenegro advancing, Albania and others also progressing.
Her warning was powerful: Europe must prepare itself for a larger Union — one with 28, 29 or 30 members — while proving now that it can support Ukraine, act decisively and remain strong in a changing world.
