Advertising or marketing for creatives throws up a lot of issues. To many it feels like selling out! But, if you want to eat and pay the rent, you need to sell some work and, one way or another, that means Marketing and Advertising.

Basically, advertising is part of a whole marketing strategy. It's what you do when you have something to sell or show. You make posters or tweets or send emails saying - come along next Thursday at 6:00 pm - or - my new paintings are ready to view at the gallery next week - or - my new book is now in the shops. It's about telling people you are there and this is what you have got. Your name on a bag is advertising - creating brand awareness.
Marketing is everything else: The decision of what to make in the first place - where you will sell it and when how you will advertise it, how you will create a market or find a market.
Marketing starts before you paint the picture, write the book or create that no1 single. Who is the market and what do they want?
If you want to make a living as a creative person, you have to create something you can take to a "Market" - that might be a craft market or youtube or Etsy, a gallery or your front room. It's all about planning.
Marketing starts before you create anything. Marketing is when you decide what to make and for whom and how and where you are going to sell it and for how much so you know there is a profit to be made.
Advertising is what you do when you have made the product and need to tell people.
