When I play my solo in concert, I love sharing my guitar influences and celebrate Van Halen, Hendrix etc…When I left Juilliard, many years ago, and I had to teach myself how to improvise and play with a VERY non-classical approach. People would say to me:” why don’t you just play the guitar”?? Funny, Ive never played the electric guitar. It felt awkward and limited in my hands:) remember: What is in a guitar players right hand, is a tiny piece of plastic called the “pick” We string players have a saber called a bow, that has been in the music world for over 500 years! In our right hand, is a magic wand, that has a living animal on it…Horse Hair!! (Somewhere in the world, a horse has no tail because of our bows!) and yet, my main influence in the entire world was the innovation of the electric guitar in the late 60’s and 70’s. I devoured all my favorite guitar players. But I had to integrate that on a bowed instrument! Impossible Mark! Well, here ya go:)
