Hamill disagreed with Rian Johnson’s reason for Luke going into hiding, so he used his own version as inspiration: Luke falls in love, leaves the Jedi, and they have a child. A tragic accident with a lightsaber, and the wife takes her life—Luke breaks and then disappears.
Is it canon? No. Is it credible for Luke? Kinda. That spiral might explain a hermit Luke. I’ve never bought ‘give-up Luke.’ But with this backstory, I can see where he might have shut the door. And it really stings—our hero doesn’t fall to hate… he cracks from love.
