In this educational Vocal Coach analysis, Beth Roars breaks down Mariza’s live performance of “Chuva” (Concerto em Lisboa). Is Fado’s intensely personal style is under appreciated outside of Portugal? Mozambique born Mariza is one of its greatest proponents.

Beth examines Mariza’s powerful tone, mouth shapes and use of vocal sob, as well as the distinctly fado techniques behind her expressive ornamentation and rubato. The analysis also explores saudade: the deep, melancholic longing at the heart of much fado music, and how Mariza uses pauses, phrasing and silence to let that emotion hang in the air.

Alongside the voice, Beth looks at the role of the Portuguese guitar and explains why precision, freedom and emotional storytelling are so closely connected in this beautifully crafted performance.
