This is an educational Vocal Coach analysis of “The Less I Know The Better” by Tame Impala, performed live on Later… with Jools Holland. From their iconic album “Currents”, which Tame creator Kevin Parker wrote, recorded and produced himself. Originally created as a quick loop and almost given away before being reclaimed, the song carries both a unique backstory and meticulous craftsmanship.

We analyse Parker’s vocal choices. From the bright, breathy head voice creating a soft, cloud-like tone, with subtle moments of chest voice make key lyrics stand out. We also address the well-known comparison to John Lennon, are they really similar?! We look at breathy onsets, tone and phrasing and compare everything with our very own John Lennon-O-Meter.

The vocals feel floaty, detached, and dreamlike, while the lyrics are rooted in heartbreak. Combined with flat dynamics, a driving bass line and reverb that feels both intimate and distant. Watch this video to discover how Kevin Parker uses vocal technique and production to turn simplicity into a sound that feels like a dream you cannot quite hold onto.
