The internal name for the Bowser Shell in MKDS Beta was "it_togezo.nsbmd", where "togezo" means "Spiny". In MKDD, the Bowser Shell's internal name is "koura_koopa", where Koopa is the Japanese name for Bowser. The "togezo" internal name in MKDS Beta is that the item was probably intended as a normal Spiny Shell and not a Bowser Shell, and was probably meant to act like it did in earlier Mario Kart games where it existed (MK64 / MKSC). Despite it using the Bowser Shell's icon.
