This is footage of online races of Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U recorded on April 8th just couple hours before Nintendo Network for the 3DS and Wii U were shutdown. Nintendo Network was the succeeder of Nintendo WFC since the 3DS launched back in 2011 and lasted for more than 12 years. There are a lot games that are affected by this shutdown, most notably Splatoon and Super Mario Maker 1, and while they have sequels on the Switch, we will never forget these games. What really sucks about Nintendo Network being shutdown is that we can no longer play Nintendo games on an official online server for free, as now we have to pay at least $20 a year for a subscription to play online on the Switch. While there is a service known as “Pretendo” that’s let’s us play 3DS and Wii U games post-shutdown, the Nintendo Network servers are closed for good as of this video’s posting. It’s been a fun time playing Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U one last time before the never being able to play that game online again.
