I found out about this tournament and thought I might as well give it a try. In this particular tournament, you entered by submitting your best time trial times on GBA Mario Circuit. The top 22 from people in both NA were selected, as well as the top 22 from EU. I finished first overall in NA, second overall. Then the top 11 from each region was put into 2 leagues, as well as the top 12-22 players from each region was put into 2 other leagues.
We were then organized into teams. I happened to be put into the Yoshi Team (Light Green), and my other teammates were put into the seperate leagues, me being the only one on Yoshi team in this league, thankfully. I'd rather not be at fault for accidentally hitting an ally :P. We were all only allowed to use our Miis (of any size), along with only standard parts... which I suppose helps distinguishing who's on what team.
The first race was on N64 Rainbow Road... interesting track to start with, but it was picked randomly, so whatever. I do like this track, however it's probably not the best for online racing. Anyway, I didn't do too bad here. The only significant thing to happen was I was knocked off by Unite near the middle of the race, which I'm sure cost me the victory. I ended up getting 2nd here.
Luck has brought us another N64 track, Yoshi Valley. This race... was a disaster. Most of not being my fault, but I can't really help but blame this game's item system for that. At the start of the race, I got blind shot by a green shell that was being held behind Kellen (Hi Kellen), which didn't appear until I was right behind him, which then followed by getting blindly shot by greens from behind. Right near the beginning of lap 2, I was unlucky as I missed the opportunity to dodge a bolt with a bullet bill. From here I knew this wouldn't end well... which then followed me getting hit by a boomerang, losing control and falling off the track. Sigh... On the third lap, I decided to take a slightly slower route to attempt to avoid chaos, which worked. Bumped a wall though. Then right at the end, I was guaranteed at least 5th place, but of course one fucking red shell hit me at the end, which put me near dead last... Fuck this game's items, man... Why should anyone get a red when they are in the back? 10th place :\
Thwomp Ruins. I thought I would do well here, but I did a good job avoiding Item Boxes for whatever reason, as well as a few bad driving mistakes. I did get hit a lot too, reds, fireballs, bombs... and missing a lot of item boxes didn't really help me catch up from all that. I was expecting a worse result, but I still wasn't satisfied with my position. 9th place.
And the last course, Mario Kart Stadium, went a little bit better, but of course, at the beginning again I was too close behind someone and got hit by a greed, and I was then pushed into a banana. which I wasn't too happy about, but I suppose it's better than having it happen right at the end of the race. At the start of lap 2 I was apparently hit by a green who went right by another racer... no idea why it decided to target me... :\\\\\ I also butchered a shroom spot on lap 2, my own fault there. I still somehow caught up and made it to 3rd place.
I ended up getting 7th overall for the first round of 4 rounds, which I'm far from satisfied with. My teammates did a good job in the other leagues though, which put my team up to 2nd place, which is tied with Team Lakitu.
I have come to realize that this game is really hard to take seriously in tournaments like this because of how bad the items were. Sure, they've always had luck in past games, but how they are distributed to other players is far from fair. People in 2nd or 3rd could get Crazy 8s... while people in dead last could get red and coins instead of items they need to catch up like bullet bills, stars, bolts, etc. All they usually get are shrooms, with the occasional star. I feel like I should do video about this topic though, so I'll save the rest of my thoughts for something like that.
