On 30 May 1971.... an Atlas-Centaur AC23 launch vehicle departs Kennedy Space Center with JPL's Mariner 9 space probe bound for Sol's 4th planet, Mars.

It will arrive at Mars around 14 November 1971, while a large dust storm obscured a great portion of the surface.
