On the night of November 11th 1940....
21 (Fairey Swordfish torpedo bomber) biplanes from Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier (HMS Illustrious) launched a surprise attack on the Italian Fleet (Regia Marina) anchored in the port of Taranto... Apulia, Southern Italy... the heel of the boot.
The Italian ships were protected by anti-torpedo nets and surrounded by barrage balloons and anti-aircraft defenses. They THOUGHT they were immune from attack.
The success of this Royal Navy raid confirmed the rise of NAVAL AVIATION over large 16-inch gun battleships.
