March 11: Dr. Victor Jew – Finding the Lost (and Forgotten) Midwestern Asian American History

Dr. Victor Jew, who received his Ph.D. at the UW under the great historian Stanley Kutler, is today Senior Lecturer in the Asian American Studies Department of the UW. He explained that Asians have lived in America for at least 206 years, and that Asian American communities of different nationalities exist today not only in California and New York but in the Midwest as well. They have lived here for many years (in Chicago and Detroit since at least 1870). He has done research in many Midwest archives, including the great Wisconsin Historical Society. Often, even the archivists are unaware of their Asian collections. Much research remains to be done.
