Manipur has witnessed a significant political development, with two Kuki MLAs physically returning to the state Assembly for the first time in more than three years.
Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip of the Kuki Peoples’ Alliance and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen attended the first sitting of the Assembly session in person. Both represent constituencies in Kangpokpi district. Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen attended the proceedings virtually.
The return is significant as Kuki legislators have not physically participated in Assembly proceedings since ethnic violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023.
The conflict has deepened the political and security divide between the Imphal Valley and the surrounding hill areas, with more than 260 people killed and thousands displaced.
