My Mum always used to mention Manfred when I asked her about skaters she remembered and for sure he was a very good looking guy. Just a few weeks after this at the age of 20, he would become Olympic and World champion but here in Grenoble at the Europeans, he had to settle for second behind Alain Calmat (who was favourite for the Olympic title) with Karol Divin taking the bronze. He went on to become a pop star and appeared in films before ultimately becoming the West German national figure skating coach between 1974 and 1981.
