A metal detectorist has uncovered more than 1,500 fragments of a crashed WWII Spitfire while trying to trace the pilot’s family in the UK.
Danny Jones discovered the 1942 crash site near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire after years of searching woodland with his dogs.
He has since identified the pilot as Polish airman Sylwester Jerzy Godlewski, who died aged 27 during a training flight after losing control of his aircraft.
Jones is now appealing for help to locate the pilot’s relatives so he can share the story of the young airman’s final flight and honour his memory.
