🚀 This is the beautiful Mammoth Wasp Megascolia maculata...one of my favourite insects 🌞

The Mammoth Wasp is really huge! They are parasitical wasps, laying a single egg in the larvae of a beetle which then feeds the growing wasp as it develops through the long months of winter, emerging as these beautiful adults.
These wasps are around 5cm long!
They are much bigger than the European or Asian hornets and are not at all aggressive...like most bigger wasps, if you leave them alone then they won't hurt you!
Yes, they can sting (only the females can sting) but you'd have to provoke it. Much better to admire them as they go about collecting their only food, pollen & nectar. You can see that they love these cardoon flowers!
