The island-state of Malta is located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily (Italy); it consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino, of which Malta is the largest island. In its history, the Maltese archipelago was always strategically significant for the domination of the Mediterranean. It is a popular tourist destination and known for its warm climate and breathtaking landscapes that serve as locations for major film productions.
The archipelago is home to some of the oldest temples in the world, such as the Megalithic Temples of Malta. The medieval capital Valletta is the site of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Barrakka Gardens.
