This Golden Pheasant is possibly the most splendidly coloured bird at Mandai Bird Paradise, and arguably the most spectacular species I have ever met. Cloaked in outrageously bold colours, its flamboyance is further augmented by a long intricately patterned tail reminiscent of Chinese motifs.
One wonders what evolutionary forces drove the male of this species to "dress up" so excessively. The reasons likely include the female of this species fancying extravagantly plumaged males, with long resplendent tails to boot!
Aka Chinese Pheasant and Rainbow Pheasant, it is native to the mountainous forests of western China. But not surprisingly, it has been introduced to many countries all over the world.
In Singapore, it is housed at the Wings of Asia aviary at Mandai Bird Paradise.
