The camera floats through the scene, revealing events as they unfold. The Tao of Videography. And there is no better place then Sunday starting at about 3pm at Malcolm X/Meridian Hill Park in Washington, DC. located in northwest Washington, D.C. and is bordered by 16th, Euclid, 15th, and W Streets. Shooting notes
This video was Shot hand-held with on a $900 Sony FDR-AX33 camcorder with its jitter stabilizer. I do have a simple rig that lets me hold the camera with two hands at about 6" apart, which allows for better stability than one handed shooting. The rig consists of 2 inexpensive mounting brackets and the Sony remote. Attached directly to the camcorder is a $15 Vello CB-510 Dual Shoe Bracket with Silicon Rubber Grip which gives me strong right-hand hold. Atop the bracket, I mount my directional mic and sometimes a light. Mounted to the bracket screw is the $10 Vello CB-600 Straight Flash Bracket, which is just a flat bar that sticks out to the left about 5". Into the left end of that bar is screwed the $70 Sony GP-VPT1 Shooting Grip. which controls the zoom, and record switch. Using that remote I don't have to touch the camera body.
Some other tricks to shooting steady smooth is to be wide, know from experience what's in the shot without having to concentrate all the time on the flip viewfinder so you can look around for the next shot. It also allows me to lift the camcorder way over my head for what is almost like a mechanical crane shot.
The final trick is to follow something moving like a person as you make the transition to the next scene. People's attention will be on that moving object near the center screen and tend to ignore minor shakes.
