In this series, we examine the dangers fisheries interactions with regard to marine mammals, specifically whales, dolphins and porpoises. Read part one to learn about terms such as bycatch, the incidental catch of nontargeted species, specifically marine mammals, causing death or harm, and ghost gear, which describes the whole of fishing tools and equipment often abandoned or purposefully discarded in the water after no longer useful that poses significant threats to a variety of sea life. The statistics of marine mammal injury or death related to such threats examined in this series are disturbing but must be considered in order to effect positive change.
