This was a cool idea I had pop in my head a few weeks ago. I like the idea of colored woods that give the impression they are a different material. From far away this cutting board might look like an epoxy inlay but up close you can see the nice grain of the wood.
The board is made of maple while the dots are bloodwood, osage orange, purple heart, and wenge. I used the CNC router to cut out the dots and the pockets. The dots range in diameter from 3/8" to 3". The pockets were cut in three layers to allow for some dots to overlap with others.
