Some crime prevention tips to assist business owners and members of the public during the bank strike.
On 28 June 1976 employees of Ireland's four main banking groups went on strike. In the absence of bank services, business owners and members of the public are advised how best to safeguard their cash and cheques.
Basic security systems need to be used adequately. The key to the office safe should be taken away.
As an extra precaution, possession of it should be changed regularly, preferably daily.
To foil the grab thief, only the cash required to conduct over the counter transactions should be in reach. The rest should be locked away.
Homeowners can install burglar alarms and electronically wired windows but even simple precautions such as fitting an extra lock, or changing the lock regularly will act as a deterrent to hasty attempts at break ins.
Fraud will be more commonplace during the bank strike so special care should be taken when cashing cheques.
Traders should offload surplus cash against cheques with other business people.
An Garda Síochána recommends anyone with a cash security problem to get in touch with the crime prevention unit in Dublin Castle or their local Garda Station.
